Carhartt FAQs

How does Carhartt clothing sizing run?
Carhartt clothing (jackets, coats, pants, overalls, shirts etc) are cut generously. Since Carhartt clothing is usually worn for active work and outdoor environments, garments are sized and cut for comfort and freedom of movement. Therefore, in most instances, you can order your usual correct size. However, if you plan layer with other garments for added warmth, you may consider sizing up.
How much will Carhartt clothing shrink after washing?
Any Carhartt clothing items that are pre washed will have minimal shrinkage. Any Carhartt garments that are not pre washed will have shrinkage from 3 to 5 percent. Please be sure to follow the washing instructions on the garment.
Should I order a larger size if I plan to layer with other garments?
If you are planning on layering underneath your Carhartt garments we recommend ordering a larger size. Layering is a great way to stay warm but you will need extra room in your outer garments to accommodate extra clothing underneath.
What is the difference between regular and tall sizes in Carhartt clothing?
Tall sizes in Carhartt jackets, coats and shirts run approximately 2 inches longer in the body and sleeve length than regular sizes. Generally, anyone from 5'6" to 5'11" can wear a regular size. Anyone from 6'0" to 6'5' should order a tall size.
Does Carhartt have temperature ratings for their products?
Carhartt does not temperature rate their products. Most Carhartt work wear is meant to be layered in combination with other clothing. Layering traps body heat and is the best way to insulate in cold weather. Carhartt's Arctic lining is their warmest and thickest and can stand up to cold weather without layering. Is there a difference between Prewashed and Sandstone?
Prewashed is denim or cotton duck that is washed by the manufacturer. Sandstone is also washed cotton duck, but it is micro sanded as well. Both prewashed and sandstone garments will have a softer, more flexible feel compared to unwashed garments. For more information about Carhartt fabrics click here: Carhartt Fabrics
How do I choose my Carhartt bib overalls size?
As a general rule you will need to have room to wear other garments under your overalls and coveralls. For bib overalls: Order overalls 4 inches bigger in the waist than your regular pant waist. Since bib overalls run long and have a long rise you also may want to order them 2 inches shorter in length than your regular pant length. Example: Your normal pant size: 36 waist x 32 length. Order bib overall size: 40 waist x 30 length.
