The First Bell Bottom Jeans in Geneva, NY
The year was, 196?, um, 60-something.
The place – Geneva Super Army & Navy Store (eventually to become Super Casuals) in Geneva, NY.
The brand – Landlubber jeans. We had ‘em first.
The customer – none other than Wilmer Alexander of the then-famous R&B band Wilmer Alexander Jr. and the Dukes.
When you’re famous (for the most part) and you’re shopping for cutting edge style in your hometown, you go to the source. We had’em. Wilmer bought ‘em. (Maybe a few of the Dukes did too.)
Wilmer and the Dukes
Wilmer and the Dukes began there musical journey in Geneva, NY. They dominated the local scene and all of Western & Central NY, playing their signature R&B in bars and at colleges from Buffalo to Albany.
And if you’re old enough, you’ll remember their biggest hit which cracked the top 100 list – Give Me One More Chance.
He’s the video with a short introduction. Check it out.
Wow, that brings it back. Great song (but, personally, I always liked Livin’ in the U.S.A.).
And now?
Well, our name has changed since the 60′s, and we don’t sell bell bottoms anymore. I don’t know if Landlubbers are still around, but we do have Levis jeans and Carhartt jeans and a bunch of other cool stuff. And we thank Wilmer for being a customer – and for his music!
